www.nytimes.com An Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on Monday morning shortly after it took off in stormy weather from the airport in Beirut, Lebanon. Airline officials said 82 passengers and 8 crew members were on board, although the Lebanese military, quoted by the Lebanese National News Agency, said the total number of people on board was 97. By noon Monday, the Lebanese military said, 23 bodies had been recovered. The flight lost contact with Lebanese air traffic controllers shortly after takeoff, said Wogayehu Terefe, a spokeswoman for Ethiopian Airlines. The cause of the crash was not immediately known, although President Michel Suleiman of Lebanon ruled out terrorism. As of now, a sabotage act is unlikely, he said at a news conference with Defense Minister Elias Murr in the city of Yarze, in east-central Lebanon. Mr. Suleiman said Lebanese Army helicopters and naval ships were operating with units from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in a search effort in what he called extremely difficult weather. The Lebanese prime minister, Saad Hariri, said Monday afternoon that the United States was sending a special team from the Sixth Fleet and a reconnaissance plane to assist in the search.
